A boat driver accused of killing his cousin in a crash on the Murray River has had charges of causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving officially dropped.

In the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday, a representative for the Director of Public Prosecutions withdrew the charges against Alex Ross Gill, but indicated a third charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice would continue.

The representative indicated there could be further arrests relating to alleged attempts to make the crash look like only one boat had been involved.

“Advice is being sought for potential further charges to be laid, not against Gill but against other people,” the representative said.

“We would like the case to remain in the Adelaide Magistrates Court so these matters can join up.”

Gill, 40, was allegedly controlling a boat when it hit another boat being piloted by his cousin Chad Gill, 37, at Swan Reach in February 2019.

Chad Gill and another man, Glen Justice, suffered serious injuries in the boat crash and were flown to Adelaide for treatment. Chad later died in hospital.

Police initially believed, after talking to witnesses, that only one boat had been involved in the accident.

But as the investigation continued it became clear two boats had collided in the river.

Gill is accused of making a triple-zero call where he pretended to be someone else and later telling police that only one boat had been involved.

During a hearing earlier in the year, the court heard that the initial belief by police that only one boat had been involved led to people not being breath-tested.

Gill will face court again next month.
