SA Police have made a whopping 18 arrests in just two days during a crackdown on heroin dealing across the northern and northwestern suburbs.

Northern District police first began an operation in July last year to combat the rising problem of heroin and meth trafficking.

On Thursday and Friday, police arrested 18 for drug offences, with most facing several trafficking charges.

Detective chief inspector Darren Fielke said police searched 24 properties over the past few days using evidence gathered throughout the seven month long operation.

“All the members that have been arrested over the last two days are known to each other, we know that they operate in a syndicate, and because of the geographical location of these people, it would be quite easy to speak with each other and move in the same circles,” Det Insp Fielke said.

As part of the operation, police seized more than 500 grams of heroin, 70 grams of meth, $38,000 in cash, a heroin press, several stolen items of $50,000 in value. They also seized weapons including a knife and a taser. The drug seizure prevented around 5500 street deals worth of heroin, and 700 street deals of meth.

“We believe that the activity that we conducted over the last few months will make a significant impact in relation to the drug trafficking and supply in the northern district.

“Drugs as we all know are an enabler of crime, they drive other crime types as well, so everyone gets affected by drugs.

Police were are unsure of links to interstate gangs.

“We’ll say its significant, it used a lot of SAPOL resources, it’s not everyday of the week we lock up 18 people for drug related activities so we’ll say it's a significant number of people.”
