A man has been arrested after allegedly going on a city rampage, smashing cars and businesses with a stick in Adelaide’s CBD on Thursday afternoon.

Police say several members of the public called to report a man waving a stick around smashing cars and damaging business premises about 5pm on Wright St.

On arrival, police found two cars – an Audi and VW Gold that had been damaged.

They say one of the cars had its front grill ripped off and the badges from both cars had been pulled off. A door was also yanked off a cafe in Wright St, and another glass door was smashed at a restaurant near the corner of West Tce.

Ali Kadir, state manager for the Human Appeal, where the Good Social Cafe operates in Wright St, was in his office about 5pm Thursday when he heard a loud bang.

“All of a sudden we heard a huge bang at the door at the front, so we rushed outside,” Mr Kadir said.

He said the hinges of the cafe’s door were damaged, but due to the thickness of glass, neither the window nor door were smashed.

Mr Kadir said he watched a man walk towards Whitmore Square, allegedly smashing door knobs, cars and building frontages along the way.

“It was quite a horrific incident,” Mr Kadir said.

Mr Kadir got in his car and followed the suspect, to warn others around him to be careful.

Damages to the cafe will cost Mr Kadir around $300.

Hawkers Corner Restaurant owner, Thanonsak Detvangon, was out the back getting ready to open his cafe when he heard commotion in his store.

“I just walked out and he had run out,” Mr Detvangon said.

The cafe’s door was shattered, which cost Mr Detvangon $200 to fix on Friday morning.

The man, of no fixed address, was arrested and charged with four counts of property damage.

He was refused police bail, to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday.
