A nine-year-old boy has died following a single car rollover at Port Kenny on the Eyre Peninsula.

The car left Pygery-Port Kenny Rd about 4pm on Thursday afternoon, police said.

The nine-year-old boy, who was seated in the back of the Toyota RAV4, died at the scene.

A 16-year-old boy, also in the back of the car, sustained minor injuries and was taken to the Streaky Bay Hospital.

The driver, a 46-year-old woman, and the front seat passenger, a 47-year-old man, both from Findon, received minor injuries.

Pygery-Port Kenny Rd was closed between Mount Damper Rd and Poochera-Port Kenny Rd while Major Crash Investigators examined the scene. The road has since reopened.

The state’s road toll is the 56th life lost on South Australian roads this year, compared with 50 at the same time last year.

The death comes as the state government unveiled an ambitious new plan that aims to drastically reduce the number of lives lost on SA roads.
