Just after 3.30pm on Saturday, police patrols and paramedics were called to the Waikerie Pool on Lawrie Terrace, after a nine-year-old boy was dragged from the pool unconscious.

Paramedics worked to revive the boy before rushing him to Waikerie Hospital. He sadly died a short time later.

There are no suspicious circumstances and police are preparing a report for the coroner.

The 50m pool, located in Lawrie Tce, closed early in light of the tragedy.

“Waikerie Swimming Centre is closed as a result of a major incident at the site,” the centre’s management posted on social media.

“Our thoughts are with the family involved as well as the lifeguards, first responders and others present at the time.”

The pool had advertised an “Inflatable Saturday” event at the pool from 2pm to 5pm, with a floating blow-up obstacle course.

According to the rules of the pool, children under 10 must be constantly supervised by a parent or guardian while in the aquatic area of the centre, and the parent or guardian must have a clear view of the child at all times.
