It is understood a domestic-related incident occurred between the man and the woman before petrol was poured in the lounge room.
The blaze caused minor damage to the floor, window and couches with fire fighters arriving and extinguishing the blaze quickly.
The property owner and father of the man involved in the incident said his son suffered minor burns to his feet.
“He’s going to be okay,” he said. “They never stop, there’s something wrong with them.”
He said his son had two young children with the woman.
“Luckily there isn’t much damage, but this is the second time we’ve had to fix the window.”
“To tell you the truth this place is my super, it’s a place we let him rent and live.”
A neighbour said the man who lived at the property was “bad news”.
“The sooner they go, the better it will be for everyone around here.”
He said two months ago there was a major altercation between the man and the woman.
“She broke all the windows and they were yelling profanities at each other.”
Police detectives and crime scene investigations were combing the scene for clues on Monday afternoon.
Two fire trucks and a command vehicle attended the scene but blaze did not appear to be taking hold of the house.
The incident, which involved two people known to each other, left the pair with non-life-threatening injuries.
No one has so far been arrested in connection with the incident.
