Witnesses to a sickening two-car collision in the Adelaide Hills have described hearing a loud bang that alerted them to the tragedy on a busy rural road.
One of the first people on scene said he was visiting a neighbour when he heard the crash and looked down to Dashwood Gully Rd just seconds after impact.
A Suzuki Swift was extensively damaged, its front end torn in two while a Hyundai sedan had veered through a barbed wire fence and into a cow paddock.
Remnants of the Suzuki Swift remain on the side of the busy road west of the small town of Meadows.
The witness said he raced to the scene while calling for an ambulance.
Another man said he heard the sickening smash but didn’t see the actual impact.
The cars appeared to have collided just “off-centre”.
The collision left a 76-year-old woman in the Swift with life-threatening injuries from which she later died in hospital.
The 68-year-old woman in the Hyundai suffered minor injuries and was also taken to hospital.
The crash shut a section of Dashwood Gully Rd for several hours, with roadblocks set up outside the Meadows Hotel and Brookman Rd.
A resident told The Advertiser crashes were not common in the area since flashing lights were installed at the intersection of Sidler Rd and Brookman Rd.
“I can’t think of the last time there was a crash there,” he said.
But he estimated about 7000-8000 cars travelled through the area each day.
The crash occurred on a straight stretch of road in a signed 80km/h zone.
