Authorities intercepted 5kg of cocaine – worth an estimated $2m in street deals – in a bust resulting in the arrest of a non-citizen.
Australian Border Force officers and detectives from Serious and Organised Crime branch intercepted the package when it arrived in Adelaide earlier this month.
On December 16, detectives arrested a 28-year-old non-citizen and charged him with attempting to traffic a large commercial quantity of a controlled drug. He was refused bail and appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on December 19.
Serious and Organised Crime Branch Detective Superintendent Billy Thompson said the arrest and drug seizure was the result of authorities working together.
“This seizure stopped a large amount of street deals of an extremely dangerous drug, which had the potential to cause significant community harm,” he said.
Border Force Superintendent of SA Operations Tom Williams said ABF officers were committed to detecting and deterring illegal importation.
“Despite the method of concealment criminals try to use, ABF officers and our valued law enforcement partners continue to remain one step ahead of these attempts,” he said.
The multi-agency investigation is ongoing.
The arrested man, who was remanded in custody, will next front court in March.
