A man who repeatedly drugged and raped an unconscious woman – filming his vile and appalling crimes – has been jailed for 14 years.

Surge in sexual assault reporting as public discussion around rape increases

A man who repeatedly drugged and raped an unconscious woman, and filmed the appalling and vile abuse, has been declared a serious repeat offender and jailed for 14 years.

The man, who cannot be named due to extensive suppression orders in place to protect the identity and prevent hardship to the victim, drugged the woman’s drinks with sleeping pills before abusing her on multiple occasions.

He appeared in the District Court for sentencing on Tuesday having pleaded guilty to four counts of rape and one count of drink spiking.

“Your offending is appalling,” Judge Michael Boylan said during sentencing.

“You had various forms of sexual intercourse with her. On some occasions, you filmed that sexual activity on your mobile phone. You betrayed and humiliated her in the most degrading way.”

Judge Boylan said the woman, who was initially unaware of the offending, had to “suffer the degradation and humiliation” of sitting with police officers and viewing the footage as part of their investigation into his crimes.

“(The woman) was numb when she first realised what you had been doing to her,” Judge Boylan, said.

“That numbness gave way to anger and disbelief and for some time she felt completely incapacitated.”

Judge Boylan said the man had acknowledged the seriousness of his offending and had written a letter of apology to the woman.

He said the man – a father of two – had a history of military service and suffered “chronic mild post-traumatic stress” but there was no link between the disorder and the offending.

“Your offending was a sustained and planned course of a particularly vile form of violence,” he said.

Judge Boylan declared the man a serious repeat offender, which means he must serve 80 per cent of his head sentence in custody.

The man was jailed for 14 years and three months with a non-parole period of 11 years and five months.

As he was led from the dock into custody, the man, who cried during sentencing, removed his mask and said “I’m sorry” towards the court’s public gallery.
