Two more organised crime figures charged with conspiracy to murder

Two organised crime figures have been accused of separate murder plots – including participation in a brazen Norwood assassination plan.

Operation Ironside Phase 2

Two South Australian organised-crime figures have been charged with separate conspiracies to murder following the analysis of several million encrypted messages.

Dozens of accused arrested as part of Operation Ironside, the majority of whom have their identities suppressed to protect future trials in the District and Supreme courts, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday.

Among the administrative matters were several first appearances marking new charges stemming from the international operation into the use of the encrypted AN0M app.

An Eastern suburbs man in his 40s, who is already facing numerous drug trafficking charges, is now accused of playing a part in planning a brazen assassination attempt, which police said would have occurred near The Parade in Norwood.

He joins five other men accused of planning to shoot a fellow organised-crime figure with a machine gun from a motorcycle.

During bail applications for some of the men, prosecutors alleged they each played a particular part in the plan.

Roles included sourcing the firearm, stealing a motorcycle to use in the shooting, being the actual shooter, and storing the firearm and bike.

The six men will appear in court in June to answer the charge.

A northern suburbs man aged in his 20s, who is accused of being part of the Norwood murder plot, has also been charged with planning to kill a man at Rosslyn Park.

He joins seven other men accused of plotting that assassination attempt, but police have previously said the group was targeting the wrong house.

He will face court with his other co-accused in June, though lawyers for the men indicated they had received more than 3000 pages of evidence which would have to be analysed before a plea would be entered.

Other new charges include the addition of a fifth accused to a charge of conspiracy to commit serious harm to a fellow gang member.

During a previous bail application, prosecutors said messages from the AN0M app showed the accused had been planning to lure the victim to the Adelaide Aquatic Centre carpark where he would be violently beaten.

Among the procedural matters heard on Friday were several complaints to the court about the amount of evidence being disclosed by prosecutors and the difficulty for defence lawyers to see their clients in prison.

Nick Vadasz, representing one of the men accused of conspiracy to murder, said the current approach by the Director of Public Prosecutions was tantamount to an “abuse of process”.

Magistrate John Wells allowed lengthy adjournments of up to 16 weeks for the lawyers to consult with their clients and did not rule out further extensions of time.

More Ironside cases will come before the court next month when many of the people charged on June 6 as part of Ironside resolution day are expected to enter pleas.
