A pair of men are behind bars after they allegedly tried to rob a skateboard from a young man in the northern suburbs, with one discharging a firearm twice during the confrontation.
Brenton John Cock, 40 and Justin John Mason, 28, appeared in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Wednesday on firearms and theft charges after they were arrested following the terrifying incident on Tuesday night.
During a bail application for Cock, the prosecution said at about 5.10pm on Tuesday afternoon, the 23-year-old victim was skateboarding near Seaborough Rd, at Elizabeth when he was approached by a vehicle he believed was an Uber.
The court heard a man in the vehicle wound down the window and began abusing the victim before telling the driver to drop them off.
It is alleged Cock and Mason exited the vehicle and approached the victim who was standing on the opposite side of the road.
The police prosecutor said they demanded the man’s skateboard.
It is alleged one of the men headbutted the victim in the nose.
“The victim raised his board above his head,” the police prosecutor said.
The court heard Cock then allegedly pulled a pistol style firearm out of his pocket.
“The victim used his board to swipe the gun away and then ran away,” the police prosecutor said.
“He then heard a loud bang come from the firearm.”
The court heard the victim hid in bushes before realising he’d lost his phone and went to return to where the incident took place before he heard another gunshot.
It is alleged he ran from the scene again before telling a member of the public who rang police.
Officers rushed to the scene and saw a man who fit the description of Cock standing in the yard of a property nearby.
The court heard Cock hid in a shed for about 40 minutes before giving himself up to police.
They located a homemade firearm.
In opposing bail, the police prosecutor said the prosecution’s case was bolstered by the accounts of three witnesses.
“They are extremely serious charges,” he said.
The court heard Cock was already on bail for serious firearms charges.
Defence counsel for Cock asked for home detention bail to be granted.
However, Magistrate Edward Stratton-Smith refused bail citing the seriousness of the alleged offending.
Mason made no application for bail.
Both men were remanded to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court in October.
