Couple lose everything after heartless arson attack

Two sons have been released on bail after they allegedly helped their father torch a caravan, leaving a Mid Ward couple homeless.

On Friday, father Scott Anthony May, 43 and his sons Joss Anthony May, 23, and Heath May, 18, appeared in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court following their arrest.

Prosecutors opposed bail for each man, as they allege they all took part in a “joint enterprise” that saw a caravan burnt to the ground in an allegedly deliberate arson attack.

It was alleged Heath, from Gawler West and a father of two, had minimal involvement in the offending, but admitted to police he was present at the time.

The court heard Joss, from Parafield Gardens, allegedly purchased methylated spirits and a lighter before taking the train to Gawler to meet up with his father.

It was further alleged he admitted to pouring the spirits around the underpass area, around the caravan, but turned himself into police and helped them find his father.

Both brothers alleged their father Scott, of Elizabeth Park, was the ringleader, who organised the alleged attack.

The court heard Scott had been suffering from a relapse, and was on bail accused of allegedly assaulting random members of the public on prior occasions, unrelated to the fire.

“He’s a danger to the community,” prosecutors told the court.

Emergency services were called to Ward Belt Road after reports of a caravan on fire about 8.30pm on October 22.

Craig Smith and Rebecca Thomas were inside the caravan when they heard something land on the roof, went outside and saw the roof on fire.

They attempted to put out the fire but were unsuccessful and called MFS crews, who extinguished the blaze, which destroyed the caravan. There were no reports of injuries.

“We came out and within a matter of minutes, the whole caravan was up in smoke and everything was gone,” Ms Thomas said.

“The people that did it went running down towards the tunnel and just yelled ‘sucked in, you guys deserved it’.

“We know it was deliberate, but we also think it was made to threaten us. This is the outcome when you’re living it tough.”
