Teresa Angela van Lieshout, accused of importing fake police badges, maintains she is of sound mind – her lawyers disagree

Her lawyer claims she’s mentally ill, but this far-right alleged revolutionary insists she is not – and prosecutors agree, saying they won’t drop their case.

A far-right would-be MP accused of plotting to overthrow the government has been charged with more offending – and prosecutors will not concede she is mentally ill.

On Friday, Teresa Angela van Lieshout faced the Adelaide Magistrates Court by video link from Port Pirie.

Commonwealth prosecutors told the court their case against the former Clive Palmer candidate, over the alleged importation of hundreds of fake police badges, had expanded.

That case would continue, they said, despite claims by van Lieshout’s counsel that their client was mentally incompetent – and the former candidate’s insistence she is of sound mind.

“The Commonwealth’s view is that we are not in a position to concede there is a mental incompetence defence available,” they said.

“That is due mainly to the lack of detail in the report … she was originally found unfit to plead, then incompetent to have committed the offences but fit to plead.

“We say there needs to be a further inquiry that’s more specific as to whether or not she has a mental incompetence defence available to her.”

Ms van Lieshout, 49, of Peterborough, has yet to plead to charges arising from federal counter-terrorism investigations into a viral video.

It allegedly shows a man, impersonating a senior Australian Federal Police officer, seeking to recruit an “alternative” police force.

Ms van Lieshout allegedly imported 470 fake badges from overseas for use by that force, and had online discussions about arresting politicians and public servants.

She was released on bail in March – the court heard she may have a mental incompetence defence to the charges but does not accept she is mentally ill.

On Friday, prosecutors laid an additional charge against Ms van Lieshout – one count of attempting to import a prohibited item.

It is understood that charge also relates to fake police badges.

Trish Johnson, for Ms van Lieshout, agreed a further report about her client’s mental state would be of use to the court.

“The expert could also, perhaps, consider her mental fitness to stand trial,” she said.

Magistrate Elizabeth Sheppard remanded Ms van Lieshout on continuing bail to face court again in August.
