One of the teenagers allegedly involved in a fight at one of Adelaide’s biggest shopping centres that left one young man in hospital with stab wounds was previously investigated for possessing and disseminating child exploitation material, a court has heard.

Appearing via video link in the Adelaide Youth Court on Thursday, a 14-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, asked the court to release him from custody on strict bail conditions.

The teen, from Elizabeth Vale, is one of three youths who have been charged with affray after an 18-year-old man was allegedly stabbed in the torso in the Elizabeth Shopping Centre on Wednesday afternoon.

The court heard the teen, who is a Year 9 student at a school in the northern suburbs, had a minor involvement in the alleged offending, and was not responsible for the stabbing itself.

His lawyer told Auxiliary Magistrate Clive Kitchin that she was unaware if her client had any relevant criminal history, but has the support of his two parents, brother and sister.

The prosecutor however said the teen had previously been investigated for possessing and disseminating child abuse material, but conceded that was not relevant to the current charge.

The court heard that despite the alleged offending being a “disgraceful performance” in a public setting, the teen would be released and able to return to school three days a week.

Mr Kitchin said the teen must obey a curfew, meaning he cannot leave his home between the hours of 8pm and 7am without being accompanied by at least one of his parents.

“You are not to be in possession of a knife or any other object that can be used as a weapon,” he said.

“There is a further condition that you not contact the victim of this offence, or attend at the Elizabeth Shopping Centre.”

The teen is also prohibited from contacting the other two charged over the incident, but was given permission to return to school three days a week.

His father declined to comment on the boy’s charges outside court.

Earlier in the day, a 17-year-old boy from Salisbury East appeared in court charged with one count each of causing serious harm to another with intent, affray and breaching bail. He did not apply for bail.

A third boy, 16 from Brahma Lodge, appeared later in the afternoon, also charged with affray and causing serious harm with intent, and did not apply for bail.

All three boys will appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court next month.
