Operation Ironside: The Aussies on the FBI's hit list

The first of 48 people arrested during Operation Ironside’s “resolution day” have pleaded guilty to charges including firearms possession and trafficking methamphetamine and heroin.

The four men appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to numerous offences.

It means the men are entitled to a discount for their early pleas.

Stuart Duncan Farquhar, 30, of Mt Barker, pleaded guilty to trafficking a large commercial quantity of methamphetamine and a commercial quantity of heroin at Mt Barker on June 7.

George Awkar, 55, from New Port, pleaded guilty to trafficking a controlled drug and laundering more than $85,500 in cash at Semaphore Park on June 7.

Tyler Hernandez Brook, 29, of Hackham, pleaded guilty to cultivating a commercial quantity of a controlled drug, possessing prescribed equipment and diverting electricity at Hackham on June 7. A fourth man, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, pleaded guilty to the possession of several handguns without a licence.

The man said in court that he had held a firearms licence at one time but it had lapsed when he was arrested.

All four men will appear in the District Court for arraignment next month. Sentencing submissions are expected to follow soon after.

Operation Ironside a ‘dramatic blow’ to Australian crime

On Tuesday a new arrest joined those identified by Operation Ironside.

Hayden White, 40, of Morphett Vale, appeared in court charged with trafficking a large commercial quantity of a controlled drug in several different Adelaide suburbs over five days between March 16 and 20.

White did not apply for bail and prosecutors asked magistrate John Wells to grant an extra two-week adjournment to allow them to prepare the case against Mr White.

Mr Wells refused the application and listed White to appear with the majority of other Operation Ironside accused in December.

Police arrested 48 of the 95 South Australians on June 7, dubbed “resolution day”, over their alleged use of the encrypted AN0M app, which was secretly being monitored by law enforcement for more than a year.

Over a period of more than a year, police used the intelligence to break up drug rings and solve serious crimes. Australian law enforcement agencies swooped on more than 220 people charging them with more than 500 offences such as conspiracy to murder, possessing military grade firearms and running enormous drug syndicates.

The majority of South Australians arrested have pleaded not guilty and some have had their identities suppressed in anticipation of lengthy trials.

Many of the state’s criminal lawyers, including top silks David Edwardson QC and Michael Abbott QC, have represented accused in applications for bail.
