Witnesses say a car was engulfed in flames near a West Croydon park soon after a teenager was shot at nearby Kilburn in the early hours of the morning.

Car fire at West Croydon

A stolen car has been destroyed by a fire with police investigating a possible connection to a nearby shooting overnight.

Police and fire crews responded to reports of a car fire in Carnarvon Reserve at West Croydon just before 2.30am this morning.

It comes after police were called to Nelson St at Kilburn just after 2.10am where a teenager was found with a gunshot wound.

The Renault station wagon was completely destroyed in the fire and checks on the vehicle revealed it had been stolen from a Goodwood address on Saturday, December 23.

Witness Tim Inglis – who lives nearby – said he was woken to the sound of large bangs.

“My wife and I heard some loud poppy sounds … looked out the window and saw a car engulfed in huge flames, it was crazy,” he said.

Mr Ingis said he called triple-0 and emergency services arrived quickly.

The vehicle was towed from the scene and crime scene investigators are set to assess the vehicle later today.

The police are continuing their investigation.
