The housemate of a man bludgeoned to death in Murray Bridge returned home to find furniture upturned, a knife on the kitchen counter he didn’t recognise and the victim’s dog, Gangster, lapping at a pool of blood, a court has heard.
Oliver Todd was struck multiple times to the head with a weapon suspected to be a hammer on the morning of December 11, 2019.
Ned Timothy Hutchinson and Terrence Bradley Wilson are standing trial in the Supreme Court charged with Mr Todd’s murder.
A third man – David James Russell – has pleaded guilty to murdering Mr Todd.
Steven Weeding was Mr Todd’s housemate and on Tuesday gave evidence of events leading up to the murder and his return to the home.
Mr Weeding acknowledged that he, Mr Todd, the three men charged with murder and many other associates were heavy users of “gear” or amphetamines.
The night before the murder, Mr Todd left the house to go to the ATM and withdraw $100 which had recently been deposited from a trust fund.
“He said he was going to go and score,” Mr Weeding said.
While Mr Todd was out, Mr Wilson and Mr Russell came to the house at around 11pm and shared a shot amphetamine.
Mr Wilson said he had run into Mr Todd at his girlfriend’s house.
Mr Todd arrived home half an hour later and told Terry “look here you black c**t you kicked me out of your girlfriend’s house and now I’m going to kick you out of my house.”
Mr Weeding said Mr Wilson raised his fist to punch Mr Todd.
“He was ready to punch him, he had his fist fully loaded,” he said. “ (Mr Todd) was whimpering like a mongrel dog.”
Mr Wilson left after being told to get out by Mr Weeding.
Around 2.30am Mr Russell came back to the house and offered to share some cannabis with Mr Weeding. Half an hour later Mr Hutchinson arrived.
They left after Mr Hutchinson said “come on Dave, we’ve got things to do”.
Around 4am Mr Weeding said he saw Mr Hutchinson and Mr Russell reverse into the backyard of the house.
From the darkness of the kitchen window, he watched as the men got out of the car and stared at each other for a minute, before getting back in the vehicle and driving.
Mr Weeding left at around 6am to collect cigarette butts and returned an hour later to find the “house full of blood”.
“They had dragged him from one end of the house to the other,” he said.
“His dog – Gangster – was licking the blood off the floor.”
Mr Todd’s body was later found in a paddock 20km away. The trial continues.
