Two people will spend up to the next four months behind bars on remand after allegedly leading police on a wild chase through the Adelaide Hills at the weekend.
Steven Cawley, 34, and Samantha Ann Maegery Clayton, 30, both appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday after they were arrested on Saturday morning following the pursuit in Woodchester – which involved a stolen vehicle and caravan later found crashed and abandoned.
Mr Cawley, of Wellington, is yet to enter any pleas to one count of aggravated endangering life and one count of drive dangerously to escape police pursuit, and did not apply for bail.
His co-accused Ms Clayton, of Murray Bridge, has been charged with using a motor vehicle without consent, dishonestly take property without consent, aggravated drive dangerously to escape police pursuit and other offences.
She is also yet to enter any pleas but applied for home detention bail.
Police were called at 2.20am on Saturday morning after a Finniss resident reported his Nissan Patrol 4WD stolen.
They responded and were able to spot the alleged stolen car travelling east on Callington Rd, at Woodchester, which prompted a pursuit.
The situation escalated when a second car, a Great Wall station wagon, towing a caravan allegedly stolen from Mount Compass, allegedly overtook the police vehicle and sideswiped it as it drove past.
As the pursuit continued, the Great Wall station wagon lost control and crashed on Callington Rd.
Mr Cawley and Ms Clayton each allegedly fled the scene but were arrested after returning a short time later.
On Monday, Magistrate Benjamin Sale denied Ms Clayton’s bail application, and remanded the pair in custody to appear in the Mount Barker Magistrates Court next month – before returning to Adelaide in July.
