Social media photos show Matthew Kokotis in Comanchero colours and hosting meetings while on bail

A former Hells Angels bikie joined a new club while he was on home detention bail – even posing for photos in the club’s colours.

A former member of the Hells Angels joined the Comanchero outlaw motorcycle club and hosted meetings for senior members while on home detention bail for threatening a man with an imitation handgun.

Photos posted online show Matthew Kokotis wearing Comanchero “soft colours” – or the non-official uniform of the international gang.

Kokotis was scheduled to be sentenced for a charge of aggravated threatening harm in the District Court last month.

But the hearing was adjourned when prosecutors revealed social media photos showed Kokotis in the Comanchero colours and hosting a meeting at his home.

Kokotis and Stilianis Orfanidis confronted the victim in the driveway of a northern-suburbs home on October 14, 2019.

The incident was captured on video and involved Kokotis producing what appeared to be a large hand gun and waving it at the man as he ducked and dived around a car.

In the car was a young child.

Orfanidis initially held a baseball bat but returned to their car when Kokotis produced the handgun.

Confusion remains over the motivation for the attack, with both jealousy and a drug debt both being put to the judge.

Kokotis was initially given a suspended sentence for the incident, but the sentence was overturned by the Court of Appeal and remitted back to the District Court for resentencing.

During further sentencing submissions earlier this month, a prosecutor told the court Kokotis had joined the Comanchero sometime prior to April this year.

“That is either during the period of time that he either been subject to home detention bail or a home detention order,” the prosecutor said.

“The information is that he has been conducting meetings for that particular group at his residence.”

David Edwardson QC, for Kokotis, said the new information was a “red herring” and that it is not against the law to be a member of an outlaw motorcycle gang, or gather in private.

“Well yes, he was (a member) and yes, they were present at his home but there is no offence at all,” he said.

“Nor have the police identified that there was any communication which was unlawful in the course of that meeting.”

Mr Edwardson said there had been two meetings at the house that were not attended specifically by members of the Comanchero.

“On my instructions the primary focus of that meeting was an act of infidelity, or alleged infidelity, on the part of the one of the Comanchero who wanted to clear the air,” he said.

“That was why others were present who were not members of the Comanchero organisation.”

He encouraged District Court Judge Timothy Heffernan to take into account Kokotis’ positive rehabilitation while on a period of home detention lasting almost three years.

“New evidence has no relevance to prospects for rehabilitation,” he said.

“There are many people who are involved in OMCG who don’t have a record at all. Never been before the courts in their entire life.

“If parliament intended for membership in an OMCG to be a relevant consideration it would say so.”

Kokotis will be sentenced next month.
