The first witness on the scene of a horror CBD crash just outside of a city childcare centre says he was still shaking after trying to help a man thrown from his motorbike.

About 12.40pm on Monday, a 20-year-old motorcyclist from Hazelwood Park collided with a Toyota Landcruiser at the intersection of Elizabeth and Waymouth streets in the city.

Damien Cordang, who was in a nearby shop at the time of the crash, said the sound of the motorbike hitting a Landcruiser was “extremely loud”.

He said he rushed out and was confronted with a young man laying on the road.

He said the young man had blood coming from his mouth and was convulsing.

Mr Cordang believed the rider to be conscious but unable to respond.

“I ran straight out … I am a first aid officer so I just took over … I made sure he was not being moved,” he said.

He said he believed the bike, travelling on Waymouth Street would have collided with the Landcruiser travelling across Waymouth on Elizabeth Street at “considerable speed”.

“His helmet was off, so that flew off on the impact … he was wearing shorts and A T-shirt.”

“There are no skids … It’s just horrible … I’ve been shaking, it rattles you.”

He said the group of first responders worked on the man for up to 20 minutes until the ambulance arrived.

The rider was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in a critical condition.

“He was definitely conscious, but he was just snoring but I kept talking to him and patting his head,” Mr Cordang said.

Another first responder Russell Dickinson, who lives in apartment nearby, said the scene was “traumatic”.

He said he heard a bike “go up a gear” just before a large smashing sound.

Mr Dickinson said he rushed out to provide aid.

“His leg was twisted round, he had blood coming out his mouth, it wasn’t a good scene at all,” he said.

“It was loud, so loud, he hit the car with force.”

In an email notifying parents, City West Child Care Centre confirmed no children at the centre had witnessed the crash.

“Everything at the centre is safe and children did not witness the incident,” the email said.

The driver of the Landcruiser, a 69-year-old Victorian man, was not injured in the crash.

Waymouth Street was closed to all traffic between Grey and Morphett streets.

It has since reopened.
