The man who allegedly crashed into a motorcyclist just before peak hour on a major motorway – killing him at the scene – has faced court for the first time.
Father and motorbike racer Kym Liebig, 58, was on his way home from work on the North Sth Motorway just before 4pm on January 7 when he was hit and killed by another vehicle.
Samuel Edward Thomas, police allege, was behind the wheel of the Holden Commodore that killed him.
Mr Thomas, 45 of Monash, has since been charged with aggravated causing death by dangerous driving and driving with methamphetamine in his blood.
Police said the Commodore was travelling south when it crashed through fencing on the median strip and collided with a black Suzuki motorcycle and two other vehicles.
Mr Liebig, of Golden Grove died at the scene, marking the second life lost on the state’s road in the first week of 2025.
On Wednesday, Mr Thomas was silent in the dock in the Adelaide Magistrates Court as Magistrate Brian Nitschke adjourned the matter for 14 weeks, at prosecutors request.
No pleas have been entered, and Mr Thomas was remanded on continuing bail.
He will return to court in June.
Outside court, he declined to comment on the charges.
A day after the crash, Mr Liebig’s wife Prudence took to social media to share her heartbreak over the tragic incident.
“Yesterday afternoon, while coming home to me, my darling Kym was killed,” Ms Liebig wrote.
“He is gone. I am broken.”
Mr Liebig’s nephew Benn Liebig remembered Kym as someone who had a “wicked sense of humour, tons of passion and a big ol’ heart”.
“An advocate for road racing, lover of all things motorcycling, he had an eye for detail in everything he did,” Benn wrote in a social media post.
