SA woman stands trial accused of hateful and vitriolic Facebook campaign against family of man who she claims raped her

A woman is on trial for bombarding a man with repulsive threats including images of decapitated bodies – and even placing a bounty on his head. But she claims he raped her.

Twitter announces changes to address abuse

A woman used Facebook to harass a man – who she claims raped her – and his family with threats of torture, mutilation and death, and to put a $300 bounty on his head, a court has heard.

On Thursday, District Court jurors were told the woman posted the man’s personal details online, offering to reward anyone who “caves his skull in or, better yet, castrates him”.

Jurors were also told she threatened to dig up and defile the graves of the family’s dead relatives, and sent them photos of dismembered corpses saying “this shall be your fate”.

Patrick Hill, prosecuting, said some of the woman’s “graphic, hateful and vitriolic attacks” asked family members if they wanted to “die in front of (your) children or on your own”.

“She wrote ‘I admit I am dangerous, I can be your best friend or worst nightmare … no girl likes to have a broken heart, or to be used and played’,” he said.

“She wrote ‘I know where you live, you have no idea what you’re up against … I’m going to hurt you so f---ing badly but I will make it look like self-defence.

“She told his parents ‘everyone knows he’s a rapist now so he will want to watch his back … you might want to start saving for his funeral.”

Social media companies tackle fake news and abuse

The woman, who cannot be named, has pleaded not guilty to 16 counts of using a carriage service to menace, harass, cause offence, threaten to cause serious harm and kill.

Opening the trial, Mr Hill said the woman and man met in 2017 when they were discharged from the same hospital and, after becoming friends, had sex at his house.

He said the man was engaged at the time, and his decision to return to his fiancee and block the woman on social media “stoked the fire of her building anger”.

“She retreated to the safety of the internet to continue to harass him, his then-fiancee, his mother, stepfather, cousin and cousin’s wife utilising fake Facebook profiles,” he said.

“She wrote ‘you are the lowest of the low, most disgusting, sick, twisted, rapist scum … I’m going to mutilate you with a box cutter’.

“Some of her hateful, vitriolic messages were accompanied by graphic and disturbing images of mutilated bodies … she wrote ‘this shall be your fate’.”

Mr Hill said she “hacked” into the family’s own social media accounts to send messages threatening arson, torture with knives and fishing tackle.

He said she told the man’s fiancee “I’m going to dig up your dead daddy”, dismember him and perform cannibalistic acts.

“When police arrested her, they recovered data on her tablet consistent with some of the fake Facebook profiles,” he said.

“Also on her tablet were some of the photos of dismembered bodies that had been sent to the victims.”

The trial, before Auxiliary Judge Gordon Barrett, continues.
