A teen boy is facing sex offence charges, police have revealed, after an Adelaide High girl made rape claims online.

Australia's Shame: Horrifying trend in violence against women

Police have revealed a teenager has been charged with sex offences against two juvenile alleged victims, after an Adelaide High School student posted on social media that she had been sexually assaulted.

Police told the Sunday Mail the 17-year-old boy from the western suburbs was arrested and charged on March 18, but could not confirm the specific charges.

He was bailed to appear in the Adelaide Youth Court on May 28.

The Advertiser yesterday revealed that Adelaide High principal Cezanne Green had sent a letter to parents on Friday acknowledging allegations of “sexual harassment and inappropriate behaviour” involving students had been detailed on social media.

In Instagram posts on Thursday night, a girl who identified herself as an Adelaide High student claimed there was a “rape culture” within the school community.

“Today online I noticed a mass amount of individuals, majorly students from Adelaide High School, sharing stories and opinions discussing the horrific rape culture that is prevalent throughout the entirety of the Adelaide High community,” she wrote.

The girl also claimed in her posts to have been sexually assaulted by “an individual” who was known to her “fellow peers”.

The post also said that more needed to be done within the school community to “combat the very rape culture that corrupts within the school community”.

The Education Department said it was aware of the charges against the boy.

“We are aware of an investigation relating to alleged incidents involving public school students occurring off-site and outside of school hours,” the statement said.

“Our schools take their duty of care very seriously and support students to report matters to police and provide a range of services to those impacted.

“The department is not in a position to provide further comments in relation to matters before the court.”

Ms Green’s letter said sexual harassment was “neither acceptable nor tolerated at our school”.

Teachers were trained in responding to risks of harm, Ms Green wrote.

She said that students were taught “consent and respectful relationships”, with a “specific focus” on sexual harassment in Years 8, 9 and 10.

“Our aim is always to educate our students about respectful and healthy relationships not only at school, but in the community as well,” Ms Green said.

“This is in addition to the wellbeing support available to all of our students if issues arise ... We want to hear about (any incident) so it can be appropriately addressed.”
