Police have arrested and charged a 22-year-old man from Para Hills following an alleged vicious assault on Hindley Street on Friday morning.

The man was charged with assault cause harm and was released on police bail to appear at the Adelaide Magistrates court on February 24.

Following an investigation after the alleged assault, police attended a Para Hills address at about 10.30am and arrested the man.

Witnesses said he believed the victim, a 27-year-old man from Seaford Meadows, was knocked unconscious after he was punched in the back of the head.

Just before 5am, police and emergency services were called to The Woolshed on Hindley over reports a man was unconscious following an assault outside the venue.

The victim was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital and remains in a serious but stable condition.

The suspect, a caucasian man with a shoulder-length blond mullet, was seen walking east on Hindley St before turning north on to King William St.

A worker at the Woolshed, Kialah Hanson, said witnesses were “stressed and shocked” after an altercation on the footpath in front of the club.

“You always hear about it in Hindley St but you don’t expect it to happen,” she said.

One of the managers at the club, Zak Green, said he saw the aftermath of the alleged assault.

“We walked out the door and saw a gentleman on the ground,” Mr Green said. “It’s disgusting behaviour.”

A witness said he believed the fight was over a separate alleged assault and the victim was caught up in it.

“He was punched in the back of the head and I couldn’t wake him up,” the witness said.

Police have not confirmed whether they believe the victim could have been coward-punched.

The witness said he chased a man involved in the altercation down Conrad Lane off Hindley St, where he was arrested hiding behind a fence.

Police cordoned off the Woolshed and closed Hindley St between Rosina St and Blyth St while they conducted investigations however the road is now open.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Meanwhile, a new campaign has been launched to have the CBD’s controversial late-night lockout scrapped.

The state government is currently reviewing the city’s liquor licensing laws including the contentious banning of entry into pubs and nightclubs after 3am.

The former Labor administration launched the tough “Late Night Code” almost a decade ago to tackle drunken violence in the city, especially in the West End.
