Police appeal to local residents following weekend of crime at Whyalla

Thieves have targeted homes, vehicles and a retirement village in Whyalla, sparking a warning from authorities for local residents to be on their guard.

Police are on the hunt for suspects linked to a spate of crimes throughout Whyalla over the weekend.

In the early hours of November 18, a window was smashed on a vehicle in Moran St at Whyalla Norrie. A camera was stolen, but was later recovered.

Also on Friday night, a house in Julie Francou Pl, Whyalla Norrie was broken into. The thieves took off with car keys and a vehicle. Police have since located the vehicle.

Meanwhile on Friday, there was an attempted break-in at a house in Lewthwaite St, Whyalla Norrie. Damage was caused to the rear door and a mountain bike was stolen.

The following day, a carport at Marevista Cres, Whyalla was broken into and two motorcycles were stolen and later recovered.

In the early hours of Saturday, November 19, a cabin at a Whyalla Norrie holiday park was broken into and property was stolen.

A retirement village unit at Whyalla Norrie was also targeted, with a purse, keys and cigarettes stolen.

Also on Saturday, an unlocked vehicle in Cruickshank Ave, Whyalla Stuart was entered and property was stolen.

Police are reminding residents in the Whyalla area to lock up their cars and valuables.

It comes as a Whyalla man was reported for firearms offences on Sunday.

Police searched a Whyalla Stuart home on November 20 and allegedly found two gel blasters.

The occupant, a 23-year-old Whyalla Stuart man, was reported for possessing a firearm without a licence.

He will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.

Authorities have reiterated licensing and registration laws surrounding the ownership of gel blasters, saying any “if you have a gel blaster, you have a firearm”.

Any person not licensed to have a gel blaster or any person with a gel blaster that is not registered can surrender it to police or a participating licensed firearms dealer as part of the firearms amnesty.
