A man using a wheelchair has died after he was hit by a car at Brighton on Saturday night.

Jason Edwards, 47, of Brighton, had been on his way to have dinner with friends at a local pub when he was struck at about 7.20pm.

It is understood the female driver had just exited a nearby service station when her car hit Mr Edwards.

The 26-year-old driver, of Happy Valley, was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital to have a sample of her blood taken for analysis.

No charges have been laid.

Paul Paget, a friend of Mr Edwards, said he was very independent.

“He lived life beautifully,” Mr Paget told 7 News.

“Everybody loved him. Everybody respected him.

“He never saw the wheelchair as a disability. He just got on with life and dealt with whatever life threw his way.”

Mr Paget said Mr Edwards was a passionate motorsport fan. Brighton Rd was closed for southbound traffic for several hours while police inspected the scene.

Mr Edwards’ death is the seventh life lost on South Australian roads this year compared to 14 at the same time last year.
