Parole Board recommends bikie Anthony Wells be held in continuing custody for multiple breaches

This bikie breached a supervision order 20 times in six months, was given another chance and was arrested for trafficking meth. Now the Attorney-General says enough is enough.

A member of the Finks motorcycle club should be held in continuing detention because he is incapable of obeying the law in the community, a court has heard.

Anthony Wells, a former member of the Mongols, was released last month on an extended supervision order after being declared a high risk offender by the Supreme Court.

But within days of being released, Wells was arrested at a South Brighton property where he was charged with trafficking two ounces of methamphetamine.

One of his co-accused, Tyrone Taipairi, is also alleged to be a member of the Finks.

A Parole Board warrant had already been issued for Wells’ arrest when he was picked up at the South Brighton home.

This week, Wells appeared in the Supreme Court where a representative for the Attorney-General applied to have him placed under extended supervision again.

Justice Adam Kimber heard that a second application, this one for Wells’ continuing detention in prison, would be laid imminently on the recommendation of the Parole Board.

Wells appeared before the Parole Board on Tuesday afternoon to try and explain his breaches.

Following the meeting, the board made its recommendation that Wells be held in custody until further notice.

Wells, appearing on video screen from the Adelaide Remand Centre, said he did not need the assistance of a legal aid lawyer who had been assigned to him.

He quipped “I seem to be pretty good at it”.

The application has been adjourned until Thursday for argument.

Wells beat an application to keep him in prison indefinitely last month after Domenic Agresta successfully argued that his client deserved another chance.

On Friday, Justice Kimber confirmed an interim-supervision order which will keep Wells under supervision. However, he remains in custody on those other charges.

The argument over the ongoing detention application will be heard next year.

The court heard Wells has breached his extended supervision order 20 times in the space of a few months.

The court heard that Wells had been on three extended supervision orders since being sentenced in May 2016 for bashing a man who had been kidnapped and brought to his home.

In total Wells has spent the past five years and seven months either in custody or subject to supervision to the community.
