A man who blew the whistle on the abuse of people in aged care has been jailed for possessing child exploitation material.
On Thursday, the Elizabeth Magistrates Court sentenced Stewart Anthony Johnston to 12 months and 22 days’ jail.
Magistrate Karim Soetratma imposed a non-parole period of six months and 15 days.
In January 2024, Johnston, 51, of Angaston, pleaded guilty to possessing child exploitation material.
He committed that offence, knowing of the material’s exploitative nature, in May 2023.
At the time of his plea, he told the media: “I had no option but to plead guilty.”
Johnston was one of the people who blew the whistle on the Oakden aged-care abuse scandal, and went on to serve on a committee, appeal in political ads, and run in a Federal election.
