Notorious accomplice Mark Ray Haydon ‘must be kept under watch’: State government

The government has labelled Snowtown serial killings accomplice Mark Ray Haydon as “dysfunctional and dangerous” ahead of next week’s Supreme Court application.

Snowtown community respond to release

The state government has labelled “bodies in the barrels” serial killing accomplice Mark Ray Haydon as “dysfunctional and dangerous” ahead of next week’s application to have the 65-year-old kept behind bars - despite the expiration of his sentence.

On Wednesday March 6, the Supreme Court will hear the government’s application to have Haydon, 65, declared a high-risk offender.

The government says Haydon - who reportedly hasn’t gone through with the necessary treatment programs in prison - must be kept under watch for the safety of the public.

They want him placed under extended supervision orders for up to five years which, if granted, would control his movements as if he were on parole.

The government are also seeking an interim order to keep tabs on Haydon before that supervision order begins, as well as a rigorous risk assessment by at least one health professional to determine the probability of him reoffending.

However, the government must convince the court that Haydon poses an ongoing risk to the community – despite Parole Board reports that he has remorse and has been a model prisoner.

On May 21, Haydon will complete his full 25-year sentence for having assisted in covering up the infamous serial killing spree.

He has already been released on parole – to live in the Adelaide Pre-release centre and be in the community only under GPS monitoring – ahead of that date.

In addition to lodging its court challenge, the government has changed the legal definition of high-risk offenders to include persons who assist in violent or sexual crimes.
