Residents from Roxby Downs to Hindmarsh Island reported hearing a massive bang on Thursday night, but the reason for the noise is unclear.

About 9.20pm, MFS crews responded to reports of a “large explosion” at Hardy St, Royal Park.

However, an MFS spokesperson said responding crews found no evidence of a fire or an explosion responsible for a large bang.

Residents took to social media to report the “loudest bang in decades” heard from West Lakes, and Cheltenham, to Roxby Downs, Hindmarsh Island and Adelaide Oval.

“I’m not saying nothing ‘bout the loudest bang in decades, heard from Port Adelaide, Queenstown, Alberton and I’m sure much farther afield,” one poster said on a community page.

Others were happy to offer their theories.

“A meteor at 3am (with a) big green flash,” Allan Hanna posted on Facebook.

“I saw from Woodcroft.”

According to Cassandra Marzani it was probably the little grey aliens.

But user Vivienne Tancelle disagreed.

“Happened in Perth too in August,” she posted.

“Ended up being a sonic boom from Singapore air force F-15 fighter jets training off the West Australian coast.”

Also on Facebook, Danae Cates said a separate bang had been heard over the Fleurieu “about two weeks ago”.

“Loud bang heard around Victor Harbor, Port Elliot etc. Then I read a post (a) week later people around Strathalbyn, Langhorne Creek also reported hearing loud bang, rumble noises … mayn’t be connected but odd.”

Others were quick to make light of the noise.

“The sound of the housing bubble finally popping,” James Fraser posted.

Last year, residents reported hearing a huge blast ring out across Port Adelaide.

The culprit of the loud noise ended up being a 42m-tall inflatable dome at Hallett Concrete at Port Adelaide which had mysteriously disintegrated just days after it was erected, sending debris across the area.

A spokesperson for Hallet Group blamed the dome’s collapse on strong wind-gust conditions that swept Adelaide at the time.
