Mother of slain child Luca Janzow ready to speak out as David Janzow seeks new freedoms

The mother of a little boy killed by his own father says she’s finally ready to speak out again — after years of silence — as her ex returns to court asking for more leniency in his supervision.

Julia Trinne, whose four-year-old son Luca was killed in 2014, said she was “ready to honour Luca” and speak more openly after learning her ex-husband David Janzow had fronted the Supreme Court this week seeking permission to drink alcohol and travel interstate.

“After sitting with it all, I feel it’s time to gently offer my thoughts – for the first time in years,” she wrote in a heartfelt post to her Facebook page My Rainbow Journey.

“Now that my youngest son understands more of the truth, I feel able to speak more openly – something I held back from for many years, purely to protect him.”

“Boy, do I feel ready. Ready to honour Luca, acknowledge our story, and begin a new chapter of sharing and guiding others through life’s transitions.”

Mr Janzow was found not guilty of murder in 2015 due to mental incompetence.

The court heard he was suffering from psychosis and believed he was a psychopath — and when he thought his son Luca showed similar traits, he irrationally decided they both had to die.

He was sentenced to a lifelong mental health supervision order and has been allowed to gradually reintegrate himself into the community under strict conditions since being granted release from a secure facility in 2022.

He appeared in court on Monday asking for further leniency, including being allowed to drink “occasionally” and travel interstate.

Ms Trinne said every new legal development reopened old wounds for her.

“Each time we try to move forward, another court appearance, article, or update on Dave lands unexpectedly. And with it, more to process,” she said.

“It brings sadness and stirs grief in ways that are hard to describe.

“It is a loss and a blow in so many forms – and for so many of us.”

She said she had “worked incredibly hard to heal” and remained determined to keep moving forward with purpose.

“It’s important to me to speak from a place of calm strength, not bitterness or anger,” she said.

“Those feelings do rise, but I don’t let them consume me.

“I continue to feel what I have to feel, and shift that energy so I can stay well, clear, and grounded in truth – and always, most importantly, the best mum I can be.”

Her raw social media post prompted a response from SA’s Commissioner for Victims’ Rights, Sarah Quick, who commented: “Julia, if I – as Commissioner for Victims’ Rights – can assist you in any way, please let me know.”

A decision on Mr Janzow’s latest request is yet to be made.
