A thug who said he would never touch another woman again after horrific domestic violence offences has now been locked up for a terrifying rampage against a different woman.

Minh Hoa Quach, 29, was jailed for more than three years after he uttered a chilling threat to his ex-partner while holding her hostage with a knife.

During sentencing, the District Court heard Quach and the victim had been in a relationship that ended in February 2023 because he had been unfaithful and controlling.

The court heard they would still see each other occasionally and the victim agreed to meet up with Quach on June 6, 2023.

After he picked her up at 11pm, Quach started getting agitated before pulling over and hitting the victim to the face.

“Having assaulted her, you told her that she could not leave the car,” Auxiliary Judge Gordon Barrett said.

“At one stage in the car you told her that if she tried to run you would kill her.”

The court heard Quach then stopped the car and retrieved a knife from the boot, which he held to her throat.

“You told her that if you wanted to kill her you could do that right now and you would hide her body,” Judge Barrett said.

The court heard they visited the Glynde hotel where Quach played the pokies before he drove them to his Magill family home.

The next morning the victim woke up and had her phone returned to her, and she called her sister for help once Quach left.

She was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for a number of injuries, including a bruised arm, cut upper lip and laceration to her head.

Quach was found guilty by a jury after a trial of assault causing harm, false imprisonment and threatening life.

The court heard Quach was sentenced to home detention in 2018 for domestic violence offences against a separate partner when she tried to break up with him.

“You said to her that you would damage her face so badly that no-one would want to talk to her,” Judge Barrett said.

“You picked up a pair of scissors and stabbed her in the back and slashed her arm causing two wounds. You then cut her throat near her larynx.

“Using those same scissors you then cut off her ponytail.”

The court heard once the attack was finished Quach directed her to remove all of her clothing so that she could not leave the house.
When asked by a psychologist why he committed that offending, Quach told him: “I was jealous. I was possessive. I was controlling. I was manipulative. I was evil.”

“When asked about the probability of reoffending you said that you would never touch another woman again,” Judge Barrett said.

Quach was sentenced to three years and nine months jail, with a non-parole period of two years and five months.

The sentence was backdated to February 18, 2024.
