Matthew Chudleigh pleads not guilty to breaking in and attacking a stranger with a bat

A man who allegedly broke down the door of a stranger before savagely attacking him with a bat and leaving him with significant injuries has pleaded not guilty.

A man facing multiple assault charges denies breaking down the a stranger’s door and attacking him with a bat, a court has heard.

Matthew Luke Chudleigh, 28, pleaded not guilty by video link from custody in the Adelaide District Court on Thursday to serious criminal trespassing and aggravated assault.

The court heard Chudleigh, of Hallett Cove, was released on home detention bail on November 22 for six charges of aggravated assault.

He allegedly chased a person down a Park Holme street the same day he was bailed.

Police will allege that the following day, he returned to the street, broke down a door of a property and chased the homeowner through the property.

It is alleged he then assaulted the man with a wooden club and inflicted a number of wounds to his head, face, eyes and legs.

Chudleigh, who was working as an arborist before he was taken into custody, was denied bail by Magistrate Michelle Sutcliffe in December.

In the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday, Magistrate David McLeod committed Chudleigh to the District Court for trial in November.
