The man charged with the brutal stabbing murder of a chef in the CBD has pleaded guilty to the crime.

On Monday, the 23-year-old man, who can’t be identified for legal reasons, told the Supreme Court “I plead guilty”.

Previously, prosecutors had alleged he killed his victim, 39, who The Advertiser cannot name for legal reasons, inside a house on Sturt St in September 2019 by stabbing her 80 times.

The woman – described by friends as an “amazing” chef – had lived in the house for the previous 12 months.

The house was owned by a Labor power couple – SA Health deputy chief executive Donald Frater and his wife, Human Services Department deputy chief executive Lois Boswell. They are not linked to the murder.

At the time of the man’s arrest, police said the victim’s body had been hidden in an upstairs bedroom, meaning other occupants of the house would not have known she had been killed.

The man had previously pleaded not guilty to murdering the woman, and been ordered to stand trial. His change of plea means he will instead proceed to a sentencing submission hearing.

Chris Weir, for the man, asked the court to delay that hearing for six weeks, to allow time to consider the ordering of any reports.

The hearing has been scheduled for late October.
