A man has been flown to Adelaide with serious injuries after a passing motorist found a car that had crashed into a tree on Kangaroo Island.

Police rushed to the scene after a passing motorist came across the single-vehicle crash on Hog Bay Rd, Pelican Lagoon, about 4.15am on Thursday.

The driver, a 69-year-old Dudley West man, who was the only occupant of the ute, sustained serious injuries and was taken to the local hospital before being airlifted to the mainland for treatment.

Hog Bay Rd was briefly closed, however police say it was reopened to all traffic before 6.15am.

Investigations into the crash are ongoing and emergency services will remain at the scene until the ute is towed and the road is clear.
