A man has died after the ute he was driving collided with a school bus near Clare on Tuesday afternoon.
The crash happened on Blyth Rd, at Armagh, just after 3.30pm. The bus had just departed from Clare High School, about one kilometre away.
Emergency services crews rushed to the scene and the MedSTAR helicopter dispatched, but the 51-year-old Blyth man died at the scene.
Clare and Gilbert Valleys Mayor Wayne Thomas said the school had rapidly responded to the tragic situation.
“Apparently there were staff on the scene in five minutes, I’ve heard that the kids’ vision of the accident was luckily obscured,” Mr Thomas said.
“Any road accident affects far more than those immediately involved. Our thoughts go out to the family and to those who had to respond.”
No students on board the bus were injured but its driver was taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
Blyth Rd was closed to traffic between Kurrang Ave and St Georges Tce while Major Crash Investigators examined the scene and motorists were asked to avoid the area.
It was the 44th death on South Australian roads so far this year.
Anyone who witnessed the crash should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
It follows a fiery fatal crash at Wolseley, near Bordertown earlier this month.
A car and a truck crashed and were both set alight on the Dukes Highway on May 14.
The driver, a 26-year-old Wolseley man, died at the scene.
