A man’s “burned eggs” may have cost him more than his breakfast this Christmas, after emergency services allegedly busted a drug lab when they investigated a smoke alarm in his apartment.

At 8am on Christmas Day, police and fire crews were called to a building in Light Square in the CBD after a fire alarm was activated by smoke in one of the apartments.

MFS crews were first on scene and spoke to the resident who told them the smoke had been caused by burning eggs, but an officer spotted test tubes, beakers and a suspicious fermenting substance.

Police patrols arrived and the area was cordoned off for public safety.

The resident of the apartment, a 35-year-old man, was arrested and charged with manufacturing a controlled drug and possession of prescribed equipment.

He was granted police bail and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court at a later date.

The clandestine drug lab was removed from the premises, and the Square has since been reopened to the public.
