Man and his puppy rescued from mine shaft after a fall on the Yorke Peninsula

A man who attempted to rescue a puppy that fell down a mine shaft also became stuck on the Yorke Peninsula on Sunday and had to be winched to safety.

Emergency services worked together to rescue the man and the dog at the historic Hughes Enginehouse at the Moonta Mines.

The site was closed in 1923 however remains open to visitors.

Just before 4pm on Sunday, police, CFS, SES and SAAS were called to the engine house after the dog had slid down the mine shaft about 5 to 8m.

STAR Group officers from Adelaide attended the scene from belaying down to the man and dog.

The owner had then attempted to rescue the dog and also become stuck.

The man and dog were safely brought to the surface just before 8pm.

He was taken to hospital as a precaution.

A statement from South Australia Police released on Sunday night thanked “emergency services, volunteers and members of the public who assisted”.
