A 20-year-old is in a critical condition, and another man has been arrested, after a fight at an intersection on Adelaide’s party strip overnight – the same spot where another young man was fatally struck four years ago.

Just after 4am Saturday, police and paramedics were called to Hindley Street following reports of the incident.

Two men had been involved in the altercation, which happened at the corner of Morphett Street and Hindley Street.

One of the men, aged 20, was found unconscious on the road.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with serious head injuries. The man remains in a critical but stable condition.

Following investigations, a 31-year-old man from Eyre, in the northern suburbs, was arrested and charged with assault causing harm.

He was refused police bail to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Monday.

Crime scene investigators visited the scene later on Saturday morning to photograph blood splatters on the intersection.

Staff at the Metro Convenience store, located on the corner, said the area remained busy until late on Friday and Saturday nights, and police are regularly in attendance.

In December 2017, 22-year-old Jack Hanley died after he was hit during a drunken brawl at the intersection.

Reece Andrew Watherston, who was 20 years old at the time, was charged with manslaughter but said he was acting in self-defence when he inflicted the blow. A Supreme Court justice acquitted him of the charge in 2019.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident on Saturday morning to provide their details by contacting Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or on the Crime Stoppers website.
