A man has died after being crushed by a truck at RAAF Base Edinburgh just north of Adelaide, with a Athelstone man charged over the incident.

A 28-year-old Parafield Gardens man died at the scene, after he was hit and crushed by a truck, about 8.15am on Thursday.

A 59-year-old Athelstone man who was driving the truck was later arrested, then charged with causing death by careless driving.

Major crash officers and SafeWork SA officers attended the scene to examine the circumstances that led up to the collision.

MFS units and ambulance crews raced to the highly-guarded military base on West Ave, Edinburgh, just west of Elizabeth.

Police said the man suffered serious injuries and had appealed to the public to avoid the area as Major Crash officers investigated.

An SA Police spokesman said it was still unclear if the man belonged to the defence force.

A spokesman for the Department of Defence said it was “aware of a vehicle incident this morning in the vicinity of Edinburgh Defence Precinct,” but did not comment about the man’s identity.

At around 9.30am, SA Police vehicles entered through the boom gates and could be seen driving westerly down the thoroughfare to the site of the crash.

A tow truck was also spotted entering the air base at 10.15am, and regular traffic in and out appeared to be continuing as normal.

Around 3500 defence staff work at RAAF Base Edinburgh, including military personnel, contractors and public servants.

Entry is restricted to staff and visitors with “a bona fide reason to access the base,” according to the Australian Government Defence website.

In 2019, The Advertiser reported that defence officials were taking urgent steps to clear trace amounts of a toxic firefighting foam in and around the land.

In September 2022, a 17-year-old disqualified driver led police on a car chase, which ended in a crash into a fence at the base, killing his passenger, Atem Kuany, also 17.

On Wednesday, the driver, who cannot be named, was sentenced to just over four years in jail.
