The Advertiser, 7NEWS Adelaide: Pooraka shooting, Adelaide teacher arrested

Christine Kulis, 39, was tragically killed by her pet dog at her Whyalla home, while her partner tried to fend off the animal with a meat cleaver during the fatal mauling.

Emergency crews were called to Murphy Crescent just after 4pm on Thursday after reports a dog had bitten a woman.

Sadly, despite efforts from paramedics Ms Kulis could not be saved and died at the scene.

7NEWS reported that it is believed Ms Kulis owned several dogs with her partner who attempted to to fight the offending animal off with a meat cleaver on Thursday afternoon.

The Advertiser also understands that this is not the first time Ms Kulis had been set upon by her dog with The Daily Mail reporting that the pet had ripped flesh off her arm requiring her to be airlifted to hospital only weeks ago.

Speaking to 7NEWS an anonymous neighbour said one of Ms Kulis’ dogs had “killed (his) cat” on another occasion.

“They were walking the dog down the street and the dog actually snapped the leash and charged at my cat...and ripped my cat to pieces,” the neighbour said.

“I feel sad about it, the poor lass has lost her life and the dog has lost it’s life as well.”

According to The Daily Mail, Ms Kulis was unwell and suffered from alcoholism and cirrhosis of the liver.

Allegedly the condition made it impossible for her to walk at times with her partner pushing her around town in a shopping trolley.

Whyalla Mayor, Phill Stone said he was sure the community would rally around the victim’s family.

“Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the individual who was involved in this terrible tragedy,” Mr Stone said.

“It really has shocked our community so I encourage anyone who needs support to reach out to any of the various local services available.”

The council said that the animal was not known to them nor was it the subject of previous complaints or “dangerous dog orders”.

Whyalla MP Eddie Hughes echoed Mr Stone’s condolences and described the attack as a “tragic and shocking loss of life”.

“Whyalla is a close-knit community so this will hurt our friends and acquaintances but our thoughts are especially with family members,” he said.

“Our community will gather around and provide support during this very sad period.”

RSPCA SA confirmed to The Advertiser that they assisted SAPOL with administering humane euthanasia to the dog who’s breed is yet to be confirmed.

In May, an American Staffy mauled a six-year-old girl at a dog park in Nairne.

The young victim was left with serious injuries but survived the “unprovoked attack”.
