A married father has been jailed after he sexually abused a teenage girl multiple times, including one time where he picked her up from school.
Kristofer Clements Kopicki was jailed for seven years after he left the child with flashbacks from his vile offending.
During sentencing, the District Court heard Kopicki, who was 43 at the time, messaged the victim on an adult dating site in 2023.
The conversation then moved to other online apps, where the victim told Kopicki she was 15.
The court heard Kopicki met up with the victim on three occasions and sexually abused her, including once at her father’s house when she stayed home from school.
On another occasion, Kopicki picked the victim up from school and took explicit photos of them, which he sent to her.
Kopicki pleaded guilty to maintaining an unlawful sexual relationship with a child and producing child exploitation material.
The court heard Kopicki, a married father, ran his own company offering information technology and systems engineering services to various schools.
“You say you had been experiencing profound loneliness for a number of years and in about 2018 you started using online dating platforms,” Chief Judge Michael Evans said.
The court heard Kopicki had read a letter of apology to the court, acknowledging the harm he caused to his victim and the pain and hurt that he caused to his own family.
Chief Judge Evans said a psychologist did not believe Kopicki was suffering from a formal pedophilic disorder and was at low risk of sexual recidivism.
In her victim impact statement, the victim said she had lost the strong connection with her school friends and her relationship with her mother had completely broken down.
“She now feels extremely uncomfortable around people, especially men,” Chief Judge Evans said.
“She says she suffers from flashbacks of what you did to her and that she has been prescribed medication for post-traumatic stress disorder.”
Chief Judge Evans said while he accepted Kopicki was not seeking out anyone underage, he knew the victim’s age and invaded the safety of her home to have sexual intercourse with her.
“Children are vulnerable members of the community and need to be protected from predatory conduct of adults,” he said.
“Young people need also to be protected against the consequences of their own immaturity.”
Kopicki was sentenced to seven years and 10 months jail, with a non-parole period of four years and two months.
