Victorian police are searching a creek on the outskirts of Melbourne for the body of missing Adelaide Hells Angel associate Kerry Giakoumis.
Detectives have revealed extensive searches of the Jackson Creek in Diggers Rest, northwest of the Melbourne CBD, have been conducted this week after information was received during the inquiry.
So far the body of Mr Giakoumis, 29, has not been recovered but the searches are expected to continue.
Mr Giakoumis’ last known whereabouts were at the Hells Angels Thomastown headquarters in Melbourne in the early hours of June 10 last year – where he had been taken by members of the Hells Angels.
Last month it was revealed the role that several members of Adelaide’s Hells Angels north crew played in the death of Mr Giakoumis in Melbourne formed part of the investigation into his suspected murder.
Intensive investigations into Mr Giakoumis’ disappearance indicate he may have been lured to Melbourne, but detectives have so far been unable to establish a motive for murder.
They believe it is likely that in addition to the two Adelaide gang members Mr Giakoumis travelled with to Melbourne by car, other north crew members also have knowledge of his murder but they have so far not assisted the inquiry.
Victorian police Detective Superintendent Paul O’Halloran said a task force comprising specialist detectives skilled in missing persons and homicide cases, as well as outlaw motorcycle gang investigations, had been formed to investigate the murder.
“Police have believed for some time that he has met with foul play and all the information we have received, particularly over the past few months, just confirms that,’’ he said.
“There will be people out there who have information about what happened to Kerry and who is responsible, and again I am appealing for those people to come forward and speak to police. I would also stress that this can be done anonymously.’’
Det. Supt O’Halloran said he believed it was likely there were individuals who “don’t agree with what has happened to Kerry, and that it went too far”.
“This is your chance to tell us your version of events,’’ he said.
Detectives also released an image of a man who was with Mr Giakoumis on the night he was murdered they are attempting to identify as part of the investigation.
Mr Giakoumis arrived in Melbourne on June 5 and visited several locations before he was last seen at the Thomastown clubrooms.
Mr Giakoumis told his family the trip was to check out a big concreting job, but there is no evidence of this.
During his visit, Mr Giakoumis stayed in contact with his mother in Adelaide and expressed reservations about returning to Adelaide with the two men he travelled with.
His mother booked him a plane flight back to Adelaide for June 10 – but he did not make the flight and she subsequently reported him missing.
Anyone with any information on Mr Giakoumis’ presumed murder is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
