Jenni Wilmott pleads not guilty to manslaughter death of daughter Jasmine, who took her own life

A mother charged with manslaughter over the suicide of her daughter will stand trial, as prosecutors and her defence lawyer argue the complexity of the case.

A mother charged with the manslaughter of a teenager who took her own life in a case of alleged “unusual gravity” has been ordered to stand trial.

Jenni Wilmott, 54, of Flagstaff Hill, on Wednesday appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court and entered not guilty pleas through her lawyer Craig Caldicott to a charge of manslaughter and other offences.

She is alleged to have failed to provide a duty of care to Jasmine Willmott, who took her own life in 2018 aged 15.

As Ms Wilmott left court, two women, who identified themselves as friends of Jasmine, screamed across the road at Ms Wilmott.

During the hearing, a prosecutor asked the court for Ms Wilmott to be committed for trial in the Supreme Court due to the “unusual gravity” of the case.

“We say that the deliberate acts and omissions of the accused were a substantial cause of her daughter’s death and her daughter died by suicide,” she said.

“It is an unusual case and it should be committed to the Supreme Court.”

Mr Caldicott instead urged the court to commit the matter to the District Court.

He said he had received and read “10 lever arch folders” of evidence from prosecutors and “it’s not that complex”.

“The District Court deals with cases of manslaughter on a regular basis,” he said.

Magistrate Simon Smart said he was constrained by the Criminal Procedure Act and committed Ms Wilmott to the District Court.

Ms Wilmott will next appear in court in February.
