James Nicholas Williams jailed for sexually abusing 15-year-old at Hindley Street Music Hall

A young footballer continued sexually abusing a young girl at a music event even after being confronted by her mother. Read his shocking brag.

What happens after a sexual assault?

A young footballer sent his friend a vile message bragging about sexually abusing a teenage girl after he was kicked out of a music event.

James Nicholas Williams, 21, continued his “forceful” assault even after being confronted by the victim’s mother – and then messaged his friend that he’d be kicked out for “(touching) a bird”.

During sentencing, the District Court heard Williams was visiting Adelaide from Victoria with members of his football club in September 2022.

Williams and his friends decided to attend the Hindley Street Music Hall to see an artist playing there.

The court heard the 15-year-old victim was at the concert with her mother when Williams approached her and asked for her Snapchat.

Williams kissed the victim before placing his hand underneath her skirt.

“She said to you, ‘No, stop.’ You responded saying, ‘No, it’s fine’,” Judge Michelle Sutcliffe said.

The court heard Williams then sexually assaulted the victim, before her mother grabbed his hand and pushed it away.

“You immediately returned your hand back up the victim’s skirt and glared at the victim’s mother,” Judge Sutcliffe said.

The victim’s mother alerted security and Williams was ejected from the venue.

The court heard Williams’ friend messaged him asking why he had been ejected and he responded saying “(touched) a bird ha ha ha”.

Williams pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a person under 17, which was charged as an alternative to rape.

The court heard Williams, who played in a top-grade senior football team in Victoria, was named a TAFE cabinet making apprentice of the year in 2023.

Judge Sutcliffe said she did not accept that Williams was not aware that the victim was not consenting due to his intoxicated state.

“Teenage girls are entitled to feel safe, to be safe and have an enjoyable time; free from the worry of being sexually assaulted at these events,” she said.

“Your pursuit of your selfish impulses denied her the ability to control what happened to her body in a public place.

“She said that her choices were taken away, her voice was taken away and her feelings were taken away.”

Judge Sutcliffe said Williams’ offending was “forceful and persistent” and the message he sent his friend demonstrated his immaturity.

“You bragged about what you had done as though it was a conquest and conveyed that you thought it was funny that you had been ejected from the venue for that conduct,” she said.

Williams was sentenced to one year and two months jail, with a non-parole period of six months.
