Jack Robert Farnham, 33, pleaded guilty to two counts of damaging a building or motor vehicle, loitering disorderly behaviour and unlawfully on premises in Christies Beach Magistrate Court from two separate incidents in over the course of 12 months.

A police prosecutor told the court the first incident occurred on August 21 at 9.30pm, after Farnham had arrived home via taxi.

“After the accused paid and got out of the vehicle, he began hitting the back window and the roof of the taxi,” she said.

It was also heard Farnham then made his way around the front of the vehicle where he began shouting at the victim before striking the front windscreen causing it to shatter.

Compensation for the damage totalled at $1150.

Several months later on April 20, 2021, the police prosecutor told the court that the owner of The Ripple and Swirl Cafe received a call saying there had been damage to his property.

“A witness saw the accused walking along the Esplanade in Christies, where they saw him trip over a bucket outside the cafe and began to scream and kick a roller door,” she said.

“The ambulance and police were called where there were issues with the ambulance dealing with the accused and he ended up being detained.”

A total of $2161 of damage was done to the cafe.

Farnham’s lawyer told the court his client is ashamed of his actions, citing a long battle of alcohol is to blame for the 33-year-old’s actions.

“He binge drinks and gets so intoxicated he can’t recall what he is doing,” he said.

“He is quite ashamed of his offending, he becomes a nuisance, commits damage and then has no recollection about it.”

Before handing Farnham his sentence, Magistrate Susan O’Connor instructed Farnham to make correct choices moving forward in his life.

“You’ve had a drug dependency issue since you were 17,” she said.

“There’s nothing to show over the last 10 years that you’re changing your lifestyle to become alcohol or drug free.

“You fell out of the mainstream when you left your plumbing job, you are just on this road to nowhere.”

Farnham was sentenced to 10 days imprisonment, suspended and placed on a 12 month good behaviour bond.

Farnham was also ordered to pay a total of $3311 in compensation to the victims.
