Hells Angels bikie Jake Diesing appeals sentence for fraternising with gang mates over a pub meal and beers

Even the hardest bikies want a nice counter meal and a beer in peace. But for Jake Diesing the uninvited arrival of two of his gang mates led to a trip to the Supreme Court.

Three Hells Angels bikies have fallen foul of criminal association laws – ironically while two of them came uninvited to a pub where the third was having dinner to tell him they wanted out of the gang.

Jake Diesing was having a leisurely beer and dinner at the Somerset Hotel at Para Hills with a friend on December 28, 2020, when fellow Hells Angels members Thomas Moritz O’Connor and Thomas Wilshire Patterson came to join him.

Security camera footage showed the trio spending 47 minutes together at the hotel while Diesing finished his meal.

Last month Diesing and Patterson were sentenced for the short meeting, while O’Connor has pleaded guilty but is yet to be sentenced.

Chief Magistrate Judge Mary-Louise Hribal said that Diesing, who is now appealing against his home detention sentence, was less than impressed to see his two gang mates when they walked into the hotel.

“Earlier that day Patterson and O’Connor had advised they wanted to leave the club,” she said.

“While at the hotel Patterson called and asked to see you as possible and sounded very anxious.

“You explained that you were having dinner and would call him in half an hour.

“Both arrived at the hotel, you reluctantly greeted them and intended to eat your meal which had just arrived before leaving.”

The footage showed the four men drinking beer until 7.45pm when they all left in the same car to go to a second location.

The only indication any of the men were members of the Hells Angels was a ring worn by Patterson.

Staff at the hotel alerted the police who were waiting when the three men returned.

O’Connor and Patterson were arrested on February 17, 2021, while Diesing was arrested on February 28.

Judge Hribal said SA Police’s Crime Gangs unit intelligence showed Patterson had ceased being a member of the Hells Angels on January 5.

O’Connor is believed to have left the club a month later.

However, Judge Hribal said Diesing remained an active member of the club.

Diesing, who runs a successful plastering business with two employees, argued that he should be spared prison so he could continue to work.

Judge Hribal said Diesing’s background included serious driving offences, including a partly suspended jail term for leading police on a high-speed chase.

Diesing was sentenced to three months and 15 days to be served on home detention.

Only weeks after being sentenced Diesing launched an appeal against the sentence.

In anticipation of the hearing in May, his home detention conditions removed, as his sentence would have been servedby the time the appeal was finalised.

Patterson, who was already serving a sentence of two years, six months and 13 days in prison for drug offending, had his non-parole period extended by two months.

O’Connor will face court next month.
