Hai Tram was allegedly caught with cash, heroin and meth in his underpants

An alleged drug dealer was caught with heroin, methamphetamine and a large amount of cash only days after police caught him selling in a hotel carpark, a court has heard.

Australia's Growing Drug Crisis

An alleged drug dealer was caught selling again only four days after police intercepted him and charged him with drug trafficking.

Hai Thanh Tram, 57, applied for bail in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday, after he was allegedly caught with methamphetamine in his underpants.

A police prosecutor opposed anything less than home detention bail.

The court heard Tram was released on police bail on June 4 for a drug trafficking charge.

One of Tram’s bail conditions was that he was not allowed to have any drugs or paraphernalia on him.

The court heard police searched Tram at Angle Park on June 8.

“He was located with $2600 in cash and six plastic resealable bags with small amounts of substances expected to be heroin, plus a single plastic resealable bag containing a small amount of suspected methamphetamine in his underpants,” the police prosecutor said.

“This is in circumstances where he has four days prior entered into a police agreement on charges of trafficking with conditions not to have substances on him.”

The court heard police had observed a silver Holden sedan with occupants suspected to be participating in drug trafficking at the Mansfield Park hotel on June 4.

“They followed the vehicle to an address in Angle Park, searched the driver and the female passenger ... who stated she had purchased two bags of heroin from the defendant and produced the two bags to police,” the police prosecutor said.

Tram, of Angle Park, is charged with drug trafficking and breaching bail.

Brittany Law, for Tram, told the court that Tram, who is Vietnamese, had an address suitable for home detention.

“I understand it (the charges) may be contested – my instructions were limited with Mr Tram, given he speaks very limited English,” she said.

“He has been diagnosed with schizophrenia.”

The court heard Tram was unemployed and on the disability pension.

“Here’s an unemployed man with $2600 in his pocket,” Magistrate Simon Smart said.

He ordered a home detention bail report and adjourned the application until next week.
