Infamous ex-bikie's supporter trips cameraman outside court

A infamous former bikie is now serving his 24th immediate jail term after footage shows his horrific stomping attack on a defenceless woman.

Mark Andrew Sandery, 53, has been locked up for another four years after he believed he was protecting his son during the “horrifying” assault.

And in wild scenes outside court, a supporter of Sandery was filmed deliberately tripping over a 7NEWS cameraman as he filmed them walking.

During sentencing on Friday, the District Court heard Sandery confronted Michael Kriticos at his Exeter residence in November 2022 about an incident that occurred earlier that day.

Mr Kriticos’ neighbour, Jodie Wakeling heard the confrontation and called police.

The court heard Ms Wakeling then became involved in a scuffle with one of Sandery’s sons, over which no charges were laid, and Sandery who made a beeline toward her.
In bodyworn footage of the attack released to the Advertiser by the court, Sandery can be seen throwing Ms Wakeling to the ground stomping on her head.
He is pulled off by officers and can be heard yelling “you bashed my son you f***ing dog”.

The court heard Sandery now accepted it was an excessive response.

“You said (to police) that you were not aware that the victim was a woman but had seen a person attacking your son,” Judge Michelle Sutcliffe said.

“Ms Wakeling posed no threat to you or your son as she lay defenceless on the ground.

“That you engaged in this vicious attack on a vulnerable part of her body in the presence of multiple police officers is horrifying and deeply concerning.”

Sandery was found guilty at trial to one count of causing harm with intent, but not guilty to serious criminal trespass and recklessly causing harm against Mr Kriticos.

In her victim impact statement read to the court last week, Ms Wakeling, a mother of 11, said she continues to suffer crippling panic attacks.

“Mark Sandery, it is a coward that puts his hands on a woman to make a woman fear a male,” she said.

“That is not power.

“That is an inferior action you let yourself succumb to, and I only hope that over time, you can take in all the damage you have caused … I wonder if you realise that one more kick or stomp to my head could have killed me.”

The court heard Sandery had a significant criminal history, including 13 convictions for offences of violence and having previously served 23 jail terms.

Sandery’s counsel, Nick Healy, previously told the court that his client – a former member of the Mongols and Finks outlaw motorcycle gangs – had “overreacted” due to a “hypersensitivity” to his children’s safety.

“He is hypersensitive in relation to protecting his children, which perhaps is unsurprising given … years earlier, one of his sons was shot in the leg via a drive-by shooting by the Hells Angels,” he said.

Judge Sutcliffe sentenced Sandery to four years and five months jail, with a non-parole period of three years and two months.

The sentence was backdated to December 12.
