Five CFS trucks, 25 firefighters respond to grass fire in Nuriootpa caused by angle grinder
A man's power tool has triggered a large emergency response, with firefighters battling for “several hours” to contain a blaze in the Barossa Valley.
A Barossa Valley man has been issued a fine after firefighters were forced to swarm on his Nuriootpa property to combat grass fire caused by his angle grinder.
Five CFS trucks containing a total of 25 firefighters – with support from SA Police – descended on the property to extinguish the blaze, which had spread to nearby reeds, grass and scrub burning along the creek line.
Volunteers managed to prevent the fire from spreading into the surrounding area, but remained on the scene “for several hours” to ensure it didn’t reignite.
A CFS spokesperson said the fire, near Murray St, was caused by a resident “operating an angle grinder”, while a SAPOL spokesman confirmed the resident had since been fined.
“Today, total fire bans are in effect across eight out of the 15 CFS fire ban districts,” the CFS spokesperson said.
“We ask communities to do their part by following all restrictions in areas under a total fire ban.”
Nearby residents were urged to avoid the area, with smoke impacting roads and causing reduced visibility.
